Christian Holm – Voice over & Foley
I work with a six-channel classic film mixer from Cooper, then into a Prism ADA-8XR A/D converter, which I can drive pretty hard thanks to its built-in soft limiter, and finally into Pro Tools.
Reliability is another factor that makes the microphone so incredible to work with, according to Christian. It sounds the same take after take—always precise yet smooth. It delivers a sound that everyone recognizes as warm and sympathetic.
Using the Q47 for voice-over works extremely well, Christian says. During development, it repeatedly proved that the microphone performs flawlessly without any plugins. If compression is needed, they use a three-band Tube-Tech SMC2B, and with more tubes in the chain, it sounds even better. In the ongoing project Super-Charlie, they’ve used the microphone for all voices except one character’s, which in the film comes from a speaker. The microphone is a tool that truly makes Christian’s work both much easier and faster. The actors hear a perfectly natural reproduction of their voices and feel comfortable.
—I also believe it actually makes a difference for the audience. They sense the real atmosphere. In my opinion, the difference between tube and solid-state microphones is that the latter might be more accurate from a theoretical perspective, but they produce a flatter and colder sound. The warmth, spatial depth, and smoothness of a microphone like the Q47 surpass strict theoretical perfection.”

OMNIVOX STUDIO

Ola Höglund – Studio manager
Ever since the Q47 became part of the mic-arsenal at Omnivox it has been used in pretty much every session. The Q47 produces a rich and colourful presentation of what ever is being recorded. It brings out the very best from vocals in particular, but it also shines on acoustic instruments ranging from flutes, cellos, upright bass to drums.
I wouldn’t call the Q47 ”neutral”, rather that it helps paint a picture, which it does in a great way. The Q47 brings stuff into focus. When listening back in the control room it feels almost as if you could reach out and touch the sound from the speakers.
I mostly run the Q47 through a channel of the AMEK console in the studio using no EQ. Sometimes through an LA-610.
